Chapter Seven

Mia

Now

“A drink?” I linger in front of my wine rack. It’s never very full, but there’s always at least a white and a good red on standby.

“Sure.”

Pulling out the red, I hold it up for Wes to see. He’s sitting on the couch in a charcoal-gray suit, the top two buttons of his shirt undone, and dammit if the sight of him doesn’t set my body on fire.

“That looks great,” he says with a smile.

It’s hard to say whether he’s humoring me or not. We might have come from the same neighborhood, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s tasted some of the most expensive wine in the world since those days.

“Sweet.” Popping the cork, I pour us two glasses, feeling his eyes on my back the entire time.

It’s been two weeks since he suddenly reappeared in my life. Full of skepticism at first, these last fourteen days have been better than I could have predicted.

Wes has come over at least several times each week, and we’ve visited his giant penthouse apartment twice. Owen talks about him constantly. The other day, the first thing he asked after waking up was if we could see Wes that morning.

Honestly, I'm even more eager to see Wes than Owen is. These past couple of weeks, I've felt things I haven't in a long time.

Though I’ve dated since Wes, and I’d say I’ve been in love maybe once, there’s never been a boyfriend that made me feel at home. Not like Wes did.

It started that morning years ago when I woke up in his tiny one-bedroom apartment and he offered to let me stay there for a while. He gave me more than kindness and generosity. He stirred something in my heart. I fell for him big time, and I’ve never been the same since.

If it’s possible, the feelings are even more intense this time. Which is scary. Falling head over heels is normal for teenagers, but for a twenty-seven-year-old woman?

Part of me wants to cling to Wes and never let him go, and the other part wants to shove him out the door before he has the chance to hurt me again.

I’m still not sure which side is gonna win.

Handing him a glass of wine, I curl up on the cushion next to his, careful to keep some distance and not touch.

“Thank you.” He raises his glass for cheers, and I clink mine against his.

After savoring the first sip, I start the conversation I’ve been planning to have all day. “If you’re ready, I think it’s time to tell Owen you’re his father.”

Wes’ eyes light up, and if I had any doubt this was the right thing to do, that’s gone in an instant. He’s been great these past weeks, and I’ve taken it upon myself to scour the internet for any criminal records or articles about bad behavior. There was nothing to be found.

He’s been focused on building his empire all these years, and I’ve seen him apply that same focus to his time with Owen.
